September 2018 Preorders

032720181037pm_003

I’m running a bit late putting in my September preorder.  As in, I waited around to the last pea in the dish as my daddy likes to say.  I’m trying to keep my preorder books under 10 books a month these days so I have to think really hard about what books I actually want to get. So, anyway I ordered:

DC Nuclear Winter Special #1
Doomsday Clock #8 (of 12)
Green Lantern #1
Heroes In Crisis #3 (of 7)
Nightwing #52
Nightwing #53
Shazam #1
Suicide Squad Black Files #1 (of 6)

Of these I’m not sure what I’m anticipating the most.  I’ve gotta see where the current story in Nightwing is going.  I’m just not sure if I’m going to like it or not.  I think the Grant Morrison Green Lantern book is either going to be glorious or unreadable.

I’m anticipating that Geoff Johns Shazam is going to be really good, based on his Shazam! Vol. 1 (The New 52): From the Pages of Justice League.  Which was, IMHO, one of the only really great books published during the New 52.  I’ve actually started reading The Power of Shazam on the DC Universe App and am getting pretty pumped to see The Big Red Cheese on the big screen.

So what did you just have to have?

I've been reading and collecting comics since the early 1980's. My absolute favorite comic characters are Dick Grayson, and Kitty Pryde, but I like lots of others too! I started collecting single issue comics when I was about 7 or 8 years old and it's been a lifelong passion of mine.

  1. Offhand, my remaining pull list at a shop is basically TMNT (all singles), Spawn, $1.50 Alterna newsprint singles, and whatever $1-and-under promo-priced issues the owner notices/orders.

I’d say the main issues I’m looking forward to are the TMNT “Macroseries” issues–prestige format one-shots focusing on a specific character, but impacting the main series’ continuity, as well as Superman/Action Comics and Batman.

I’m so incredibly on-the-fence with The Green Lantern…but as far behind as I am on READING GL stuff, this seems like it’ll be a solid jumping-on point, so I won’t be surprised if “day-of” I opt to pick it up (at least #1).

I don’t think I ever realized there was a concrete release date for a Shazam series; I’d mentally “blocked” stuff like that into the indeterminate “someday in the future” with the Doomsday Clock delays and such.

I’d picked up the New 52 Shazam hardcover shortly after it came out, and (at least in 2018 as I remember it) enjoyed the thing; I also remember then seeking out a bunch of other Shazam material.

So that’ll likely be another where–day of–if it’s available and I’m not totally turned away on ridiculousness with variants I’ll likely at least get #1 and go from there.

Due to layoffs and moving, the shop I maintain the “existing” pull-list at is not the most-local, and other than the DCBS “bundles” for awhile at the start of Rebirth, I’ve mostly gotten away from pre-orders, hence all this day-of stuff… 🙂

  2. You have some interesting choices. I had to google the Alterna newsprint singles, because I’ve never heard of them. Ah, the things I would love to try out if I had a bigger budget. At least that’s what I say, but truthfully if I had more to spend I would probably still end up spending 100% of it on DC books. 🙂

I try not to go into the comic shop too much, it just leads to overspending. I’m like a kid in a candy store, and I want all the things! 🙂 I do my pre orders from DCBS; and I sometimes end up doing day-of orders from Midtown Comics. Usually pick up a few back issues or fills when I do that.

I haven’t read much Green Lantern material since the New 52 started. I was only getting the Green Lanterns book and I’m behind on it, and have just been picking up issues as I can. I’ll probably get at least the first few issues of the new Green Lantern and Shazam books to try.

  3. I actually hate to ADMIT it, but I’m not sure I’ve gotten around to actually READING the Alterna issues. 😦

Had some stuff going on right about the time they started coming out that led to a huge chunk of my current year-and-a-half-later “backlog” of comics reading.

I don’t feel TOO badly, though…I really want to support the price point and format, and love the trade dress and such. They seem to be “cheapo serialized reprints” of previously-published graphic novels…which I also think is a great way to do things. I might not spend $10+ on an unknown volume…but give it to me in 3-5 cheap single issues chunks and I’ll at least check out that first issue.

If/when I get to the actual reading I’d hope I get around to some specific coverage of ’em in my blog!

I’m a weekly Wednesday guy with the comic shop(s). Aaaaand often spend more than I “should,” typically augmenting my weekly new comics WITH stuff from bargain tables/bargain bins and such.

I’d followed a lot of Johns’ run on GL, beginning with GL Rebirth back in 2004, and following through to somewhere around Brightest Day; I missed out on/skipped about a year until New 52, and followed the first few issues there; I think I pretty much dropped DC in general in early 2012, and was primarily TMNT and Valiant for several years.

Despite that…GL makes up a significant chunk of my library, making up about a shelf and a half!

  4. That’s pretty much the same run of Green Lantern that I’ve enjoyed. I don’t have many single issues of it though. Mostly in trades and digital graphic novels I picked up on the cheap. I’ve also read some of the Kyle Rayner period but didn’t get as much into it. I’m hoping to get to read some of the other Green Lantern books sometime down the road on the DCU App.
