The New Age of DC Heroes continues with The Silencer #1 by: Dan Abnett, John Romita Jr., Sandra Hope (Inks), and Dean White (Colors).
The story set up for this is that our lead Honor Guest once known as The Silencer was a member of Leviathan; a criminal organization and subset of the League of Assassins controlled by Talia Al Ghul. She’s been out of the life for six years, has gotten married and is now the mother of a three year old. When all of a sudden people from her old life show up and drag her back into the life she’d left behind.
Story wise this is a solid issue. Nothing mind blowing was presented but the potential is there. Honor is the narrator of the story and you get a feel for her from the beginning of the book. I feel that this could be really good as it goes on.
Lets talk about the artwork, because frankly I have some conflicted feelings about it. There were action scenes in the book that really looked on point like when she would activate her powers and everything would get a bluish hue to them; or the stark contrast of a black silhouette against an orange-ish background. Other panels… I felt like someone spun the color wheel and randomly filled items with muted pastels… like the grocery shopping scene with a purple shopping cart, turquoise flooring, and mint shelving. It felt a bit sloppy to me, and I thought the story and the line-work deserved better.
Even though I didn’t love all the art I definitely felt like I would like to read the next issue so I will be picking that up when it comes out.
