Marvel Unlimited 1/24/2018

New in the Marvel Unlimited app today were comics originally published July 19, 2017 [List Below]. Also back issues of Fallen Angel #1-8, and Namor: The Sub-Mariner #1-10.

I jokingly say that Marvel Unlimited is full of unlimited disappointments but here I am again getting a new year of it.  I let it lapse last year so I haven’t had it for about eight months or so I think. I usually will read any new #1’s that show up so today I read Astonishing X-Men #1, and am quite surprised to say that I actually thought it was good. I added that to my library list and plan on reading the next issue.

So what I really need to know is are any of these worth reading?  Any opinions out there? Wanna rec me or warn me about any of the issues on this list?  For me the ones with a strike through are hard passes; I just have no interest whatsoever.

  1. All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #6
  2. Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #9
  3. America #5
  4. Astonishing X-Men #1
  5. Daredevil #24
  6. Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again #2
  7. Doctor Strange #23
  8. Invincible Iron Man #9
  9. Luke Cage #3
  10. Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok Prelude #2
  11. Mighty Thor #21
  12. Monsters Unleashed #4
  13. Ms. Marvel #20
  14. Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #2
  15. Poe Dameron #17
  16. Royals #5
  17. Secret Empire #6
  18. Secret Empire: Brave New World #4
  19. Spider-Man 2099 #25
  20. The Totally Awesome Hulk #21
  21. U.S.Avengers #8
  22. Ultimates 2 #9

  1. Well, you already hit Astonishing X-Men, which definitely would be my top recommendation of that list!

I’ve heard generally good stuff about the Renew Your Vows series, and really oughtta check that out myself. I passed on it feeling grumpy about a $4.99 #1, I believe; and general frustration with Marvel.

I’ll probably also check out the various Thor stuff, and may even binge out the various X-stuff.

So I guess I’m in a similar boat, at least in “experientially” lapsing with Marvel Unlimited…except I’ve been paying for the “monthly,” and with various stuff going on in life, been ages since getting around to making use of it.

I’ve got the first 4-5 issues of Astonishing in print, but only’ve read #1 myself so far, but been meaning to get caught up a bit, though I let the print issues go…if I’ve gone this long, I can either wait for them on Marvel Unlimited, or at least a collected edition.

I really very much wish DC had a comparable counterpart, and would *probably* (at least short-term) happily pay even $20/month for that, if they were huge out the door.

    1. Thanks for the recs! 🙂 I tried to start Renew Your Vows but for some reason the app wouldn’t load the first issue. Oh, well; I’ll try again later. The price of comics these days makes it hard to just buy something to try it out. I probably wouldn’t read anything by Marvel if they didn’t have this app. I can’t even afford all the DC books I want. And if I could get all the DC books I wanted there are Archie and other indie titles I would want more than Marvel books I read in recent memory anyway. I would love it if DC would do something similar. I’ve really been hoping that the DC app that’s supposed to come out this year with the Titans and Young Justice shows on it would include comics as well; but no news on it so far. I have my fingers crossed but I’m not holding my breath.

  2. You’re welcome!

Yeah, I’ve had some issues with the app; but then, I’m still using a iPad2, and I’m probably *lucky* that that even still functions. I think Apple is trying to phase *me* out… (c’est la vie)

And definitely agreed…at $3.99 and $4.99 and up, I’m not at all keen on just arbitrarily trying much; or I might splurge on a first issue when I’m already spending a fair bit…after all, at a certain point, what’s another $4 really?

But the huge $ weeks I’ve had lately and ever-increasing to-be-read pile means I need to really get serious about re-evaluating what I’m actually keeping up with and such.

On the Archie front, have you tried the Riverdale Digest? I’m woefully behind reading those, too, but for $5.99 or $6.99, they seem to have 4-5 issues of the “New Archie” books, just a couple years “later” than the single issues. And Archie’s doing some Marvel Digests with varying themes (I believe they’ve done a Spider-Man one, Thor, Avengers, and X-Men so far).

I’m not sure if I heard about a Titans/Young Justice app for DC…that could be interesting! Yet another thing I’m behind on, though…gotta catch up on Young Justice! 🙂

    1. I’ve seen the Riverdale Digest at Wal-Mart one time. I’m a little put off by the size of them since I can’t see that great. I actually bought that Archie Comics Humble Bundle they had a few months ago so I have a good little collection of them in digital at least now. I hope they give more news about that new WB/DC app soon, I also saw that they had ordered a 26 episode cartoon based on Harley Quinn that’s supposed to be on it but still no announcement about the launch date, name or what will actually be included in the service.
