Superman (2016-) Vol. 1: Son of Superman by Peter Tomasi

I read this as single issue comics; collection contains issues #1-6 and the SUPERMAN: REBIRTH one-shot.
I’ve really been enjoying the Rebirth relaunch of the DC line; and the Superman books have been particularly interesting to me as it has brought back into play the previous continuities Superman.
This first volume pits Superman, Lois, and their son Jonathan against the Eradicator. A strange machine bent on protecting the purity of the Kryptonian genome that has somehow allowed it to travel through time and space to find the Kent family. Of corse it’s not very happy to find out about Jonathan’s mixed heritage.
The story has the nuances of modern comic storytelling but also channels a bit of old Silver Age wackadoodle. The hidden Batcave on the Moon was golden; and I’m ok with Krypto showing up anytime.
If this volume suffers from anything it’s some slight inconsistencies in the artwork. I personally don’t find any of the art so jarringly different though, as to take you out of the story.

And one from issue #3. I really like the feel of this as being a family story. It’s a dynamic that’s been missing for too long.

Agreed Natalie, Rebirth has been astonishingly great! Loving personally – Wonder Woman (no surprise there huh 😉 ) Detective Comics and Red Hood and the Outlaws, oh and Green Arrow has been pretty damn good too. 🙂

I’ve liked most of the books I’ve read so far, I was sporadically into Superman before but I’ve really liked Action Comics and the Superman books with the exception of the New Superman. Also liking Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lanterns, Nightwing, Batman, and Titans a lot.

I extra-dipped (double? triple? quadruple? 3 printings, digital, and the hardcover?) with the Rebirth Special.
Loving the Superman books in particular…been getting the bundles from DCBS for the whole thing, but woefully behind in the actual reading (initially from shock of a layoff and more recently for playing Pokemon Sun).
I physically picked this book up off the table last week, but put it back–I have the single issues, and plan to snag the deluxe hardcovers (Superman, Action, and Detective, at least) later this year. Knowing the hardcovers are coming, can’t quite justify the paperback right now with so much else I want.
Loving both Superman titles, AND the double-shipping at $2.99… feels like a welcome return to something I’d missed in the Superman comics for over a decade: a new Superman issue nearly every week that I actually want to go to the shop for, even though it’s double-dipping since I’m getting the bundles.
Which is all a long-winded way of getting to the point of this comment: great post, and I’m thoroughly gonna blame you if this sticks with me and leads to me actually buying this paperback anyway. 🙂

Haha! On occasion I have double dipped myself — mostly by getting digital “reading” copies. I’m behind reading most of my books by two months but trying to play a bit of catch up. Rebirth has really gotten me excited about the story lines again.
